Actually, social media is a tool. No, that is not correct. A social medium is a tool. Social media is a set of tools (media is plural). Social networking is the activity that goes on somewhere using those tools. It happens online and it happens online, and it was happening long before the Internet was invented and long before the flush toilet was invented.
