The culture war over social media is raging out of control. In the latest conflagration, Vincent Nichols, the new Archbishop of Westminster, launched a vitriolic attack on the unnaturalness of social media.

And have to say that I am a HUGE fan of FriendFeed. It's hard to explain why. But I definitely "feel" it is much more than an aggregation tool.
Also I like the end comments of the article about social media might "actually result in a greater appreciation for the richness and depth of real human interaction"
I can see where this might be possible. A very cool thought. And when reading the Archbishops arguments, I had images of life at the time of Michelangelo or Da Vinci - a romanticized lifestyle when people had time. Also a cool thought. My life is somewhere in the middle :)

Still, I am all favor of social interaction "in real life" (IRL, geek speak). It is not a split between mind and body, nor a contradiction to have online interactions and physical meetings. I am very fascinated by The Third Place concept and I created a physical meeting place for entrepreneurs and business minded individuals in Gothenburg, Sweden, in 2006, together with some business partners. I want to create a new place in America for "biz & buzz in a cup," inspired by the historical coffee-houses.
