Interesting point, Murray. Niche blogging is certainly only one approach but I think the way it fits with the Google search model of keywords by topic has probably made it the prevalent approach to blogging up until now. However, there's a new kid in town and there's every reason to believe that social media, with its focus on individuals and their connections, may shift the focus toward a more community oriented and individualistic style in the future.

Indeed Shawn, digging down into SEO and niche specific keywords will certainly give you an edge within search engines but it seems like the best way to build a true community is through recommendations from others - social media is one of those vehicles to do so.
