Trials are a very useful way of demonstrating to reluctant customers that you have something that they will value. A trial allows them to see for themselves what your product or service can deliver without committing to the full purchase price. Used correctly trials can be a tremendously effective way of boosting sales, particularly of products or services that do not yet have a reputation...

I have seen a bit of a trend to charge customers for the trial the full fee and if they are not happy within a month they get their money back.

The other thing about trials even if it is free or a small charge is the lack of follow up by the business. You may get one follow up email asking how it is going or some tips, but rarely do you get any more. It seems such a waste of an opportunity.

I've seen a lot of those full price trials with money back guarantees too. They are the logical extension of what Caelen talks about in his blog post in terms of qualifying a prospect's purchasing ability, but I'm sure they massively reduce the number of people who take the trial in the first place.

In reality it is a full sale where you promise to give the money back if the customer isn't happy, and both sides know this is a relatively rare occurrence.

I agree completely about the lack of follow up emails to trial participants being a real waste of a sales opportunity.
