USA Today small business expert Steve Strauss gives some tips for small business PR when seeking to gain media exposure. Steve argues that getting traditional media coverage (newspaper, TV) can gain extra credibility for your business because it is third party validation, not the same as an add or other publicity the business itself puts out. One of the best ways to do this, which surprisingly Steve doesn't discuss as one of his tips, is to become a recognized expert in your field. If you run a local restaurant, are you an expert on a certain type of food, say healthy eating, that would lend itself to a trend story or perhaps even a series? Are you a local professional or consultant who could comment regularly on some aspect of local news stories? If your business is in the downtown, could you become known as the person to interview on downtown business issues. Some of this is the same kind of expertise you might put into a business blog, but if local journalists get to know you not just as someone trying to promote their business but as an expert who can regularly be counted upon to provide valuable commentary on important stories and issues, you will soon gain all the credibility your business needs.
