Another good article Jackie and it is so true about needing to find out about working styles. I was used to managing marketers who like their independence and use their initiative (well the good ones do). Then I had to manage people in sales and a couple had completely different styles. They expected me to be more hands on and directive. It took me a while to figure it out and adapt to get the best from them.

Also like the reference to customers. I find increasing your observation skills can give you good insights about them.
