If by automated answering you mean a system w/a robot menu - "please press 1 for sales, please press 2 for marketing" - these can be quite annoying, Especially for the elderly.
A trick I learned working as a operator was that if there is a human on board, press 0 (zero) and it'll usually stop the message & send you to the operator (usually, not always).
