I think the key to success on social media marketing is getting and staying engaged with customers on a regular basis. Too many business owners think that establishing a presence on Twitter and Facebook and occassionally posting an update will make them successful. That is a wrong thinking.

Another point I would make is to not expect sudden increase in sales just because you do social media marketing. It is more about building your brand and awareness than increasing sales.

You are very right! There is more to social media than just promotional and marketing activities. I think there is no other avenue that offers huge opportunities of meeting other professionals in similar fields than social media.
