What motivates people to buy? This post at HomeBasedBusiness.com talks about what makes people go for a competitor instead of you, especially if you're sure you've got the better product. It turns out looking at the quality of your product might be the wrong way to look at competitiveness. Other more basic factors may affect whether a customer goes with you or someone else. Thanks for the comment, Cindy. A similar story is the triumph for years of AM broadcasting over FM even though FM was clearly superior. Even when FM radio was introduced with clearly superior sound quality many refused to ditch their AM receivers for the new signal. FM took years to catch on even though theoretically people should have jumped at the new and better technology.

I think this it is always fascinating when you notice someone buy product B when logically they should have bought product A. You can really dig up some interesting information on human behavior. I know that trust is a huge issue for me.

This also reminds me of another story. There was one particular clothing brand that used "shock" advertising once in the past, positioning themselves as racists. It was a popular brand at the time. As far as I know they only did one such advertising campaign, but I still refuse to buy it even if it is on sale... and also continue to tell friends who wear it about what this brand once stood up for. :)
