I'd say it depends on the gatekeeper in question, and their understanding of what their boss expects - some aren't going to let anyone unknown get through, per instruction. If you get a marshmallow, maybe you'll sweet-talk (or bludgeon) your way through - a tough one isn't going to bend no matter what you say (I guarantee it).
You're right about not lying, too. Some try to get through by saying they're an ol' buddy of the boss - 'went to school with them. When the boss is asked (prior to connecting the call), and they say they've never heard of the caller, who looks stupid?
