I don't know that it is "more" common, I think it is very common--not just with sales people. In too many conversations, we fail to listen and understand before we respond.

Dave, as an experienced purchaser I have witness this kind of wrong defensive manner by sales people after I have come with a valid objection. It is great that you highlight this issue. Do you think that it is more common behavior nowadays
