I also cringe when I see that someone has 250,000 followers but in turn they are following 250,000 others, many of whom are dubious in nature.

I have to very respectfully disagree. I laugh (respectfully) when I see the number of Twitter followers people have.
I checked out one guy's account who recently posted that he had reached 100,000 followers. I checked out his first, or last?, 100 followers as a sampling. At least 80% of them were spammers, pornographers and other types of weirdos.
I have 800 Twitter followers and if I whittled down all of the non-relevant ones (pornographers, gamblers, hookers, steroid-peddlers, etc.) I'm sure I would be left with no more than 50 legit followers.
I'm just not sure how much credence i give, or how much of a reputation I see/expect when someone says they have 250,000 followers.
