Good points here about product differentiation, but I wonder if the key isn't that, at the end of the day, you want your product or service to be incomparable to the competition. Is this really so impossible? Not if you look at Apple, Google, Facebook, etc. While imitating these brands should be easy, it turns out it's not. Yes, that may have something to do with the way the product or service is sold, but I would argue it also has something to do with the product or service too.
