As far as Alexander goes, at 18 he took over the combined armies of Macedon when his Dad Philip was killed in battle. Some of the soldiers would have followed voluntarily for reasons of their own (including glory, power, plunder, and love of battle), some would have stayed for fear of reprisal - but here's where your question comes in: why did the rest follow? Good question!
