In the U.S. they call it face management. This is to describe those managers who think that they need to see your face or at least to be in or near your space, so as to ensure that you are doing your work.

Hi Ciaran.

Interesting that you brought up employee surveys. The hospital I worked at loved to hand out employee surveys - but only to new hires (while they were still wide-eyed with excitement). That way, the results were all predictably glowing.

I saw a very interesting study of a company in the US recently, where on a given day each month, all employees were given the opportunity to work with anyone else in the business and on a task of their choosing.

They calculated that productivity increased substantially and many new business initiatives were launched as a result of this one day. In effect, they took management out of the equation and productivity went up? - Niall
