I agree that most of the time it's a good idea to be specific and exact in choice of words, however one of the beauties of the English language is that it's a nuanced language with many meanings open to interpretation depending on context. Sometimes this can work to one's advantage in business, for instance where you might not want to exclude something but also not advocate it. Interesting post. Is this Chris actually posting?..or someone else--just wondering.

To answer your second question first, yes it is I Chris Farmer posting.

In relation to your point yes you are right there are certain contexts that usefully employ open and vague language. Example: politics.

In politics one must use open language in order to appeal to the greatest number of people. Example “I believe in a good education for all our children, vote for me”.

However in order to implement the principle of “a good education” one must first define it.

How can you implement a policy without there being a definition?

This shift from the ‘generalise statement of positive intent’ to ‘The specific declaration of action’ represents the biggest challenge for those people who are tasked with the implementation of policy created by politicians.
