It is my belief that a humungous mistake business owners make is running out and hiring people who are just like them.
The reality that probably stings is that you don’t need more people like you, even though you may be totally awesome. Entrepreneurs are usually big picture/big concept/big idea type of people. Not all, but more than not.
Big idea people like to try new things and what happens is they space out all the things that need to get done because they let themselves get distracted by the new shiny objects they pursue.
So what happens is that we like people who are like us and this causes you to fall in love with someone easily distractible and more likely than not, they’re gonna space out on the work you delegated to them that you couldn't do because you space out yourself. This means you don’t want another big idea person on your team if you have a problem getting things done. You want an action person who is probably the polar opposite of you – a person who likes to makes lists and goes crazy if they don't get them done.
When you interview these people it’s gonna feel weird. That’s good. Your opposite can compliment your abilities and make it possible to move forward fast.
So your goal is to hire/partner/team member who is the opposite of you who has a proven track record of getting things done and to make sure they have aspirations and then make sure they step up and perform.
It is definitely worth testing out creating a team that has both a detail oriented and a big picture person to make sure both of these critical areas of the project are covered. :)
