Diversity works. As interested business leaders, it is our role to keep diversity and inclusion at the forefront of corporate strategy conversations at a time when, due to changes in the economy, decreasing or eliminating these efforts are often a cost-cutting measure. Yet this is the time to delve deeper into the diversity and inclusion conversation so that when the economy turns, and our business models and talent look a bit different, we are poised to maximize new revenue opportunities and our human capital. Diversity works, and we were reminded this week that we must be continuously working at it.

What you need to focus on is the individual.

I think that embracing diversity is the ultimate goal of the Human Race - that in the distant future there will only be one race made up of all the diversity that exists now. I think that our true strength lies in this, and that the benefits reaped will be beyond our wildest imagination.

Diversity should be more than just a catch phrase though too often it is. Reaching beyond your own culture, community, comfort zone, inner circle (whatever it is you're used to) is critical to success in small business or pretty much any endeavor. Ignoring new opportunities, new partners, new labor pools, new customers is not simply short sighted. It can be fatal.
