Let’s start with the very beginning. The birthday cake was first invented by ancient Egyptians, because they believed that when the pharaohs were crowned, they would become Gods. In this circumstance, they would celebrate that day as a coronation ritual which in terms was a huge deal, so it then became their “birth” as a God. So following this, the Greeks caught on and decided that they too wanted to celebrate loved ones in a more heartfelt way. They decided to bake a moon-shaped dessert and offer it to Artemis, goddess of the moon. The moon cake was even topped with candles, in a way to make the moon “shine.”
