I for one think your biz should be something you're passionate about, or at least something you can tolerate

Agree, but having said that my first successful business was doing something I hated, with a passion. I had a string of failures following my passions and on the advice of my mentor I went back to doing what I was good at.

Hi Heather, thanks for the input. You raise a very important point, and it is one I keep emphasising with my new start-up mentees. As a new business owner you cannot expect to know everything and the mark of a good entrepreneur is the courage to admit this and seek qualified help when necessary

Tony,

Great introduction. Possibly the best advice is looking at your expertise first. This doesn't mean you need to have all the skills necessary to run your business. You'll doubtless need to learn plenty and partner where necessary along the way. But an opportunity is only good if you have the skills necessary to take advantage of it, whether that's because you know enough to do much of the work yourself at first or are good enough at raising money, recruiting expertise and marketing to make it work even without the hands on experience.
