Do a quick search on Google for a “small business start-up checklist” or a “guide to small business start-up” and you’ll get back many really informative articles (a few of which I will reference here). As far as starting a business at home, frugally, perhaps nothing neats writing...as I found out.
No real start-up costs.
A portfolio and referral base can be built up through experience.
Anybody who is good with words and putting thoughts to paper can give it a whirl. Great as a career or to make extra money and the side.
And if it doesn't work out, no real investments have been made, so nothing tangible will be lost!

True. Except there's *a lot* of competition out there for freelance writers. So to actually earn a decent income in this area, one either has to spend some time and money promoting his/her work *or* the writer has to be exceptionally talented. You fall into the second category.
