I think you can track your ROI from Social Media these days - with stats and tracking the business you receive. Although obviously it is hard to track the exposure you receive. I know Social Media has worked for me but it does take time to build - some people think it's just a sign up to Twitter and a few tweets then wonder why they don't have business from it.
