Not all keywords were created equal. Broad keywords (software, lawyer, insurance) usually have an incredibly high search volume. “Insurance,” for instance has over 30 million searches each month in the US alone! Because there is so much traffic associated with broad keywords, they are wildly competitive for both PPC and SEO. More traffic generally amounts to more business, so companies throw hundreds of thousands of dollars into “owning” these keywords. (WordStream recently did a great breakdown of the most expensive keywords in Google AdWords.) So what is a smaller company or a start-up to do? Target long tail keywords!
