The good news is that some of the tools you've mentioned, particularly mobile and social, can put the smaller businesses on equal footing with the big guys. So compared to the old days and the cost of marketing in legacy media, this can be a great time to be in a small or local business, if you're ready to deal with the learning curve.

You're so right Heather, lots of opportunity if you're ready to deal with the learning curve. Google+ (Google Places) alone has enables small businesses with little in the form of SEO to leap frog ahead of national brands with million dollar SEO plans. The search engines are trying to make everything local and have given local businesses an edge over the big brands.

Franchises are starting localize their location specific unit pages as well as creating local content for their blogs, something to watch out.
