I agree on the Second comment that there are still people doing these things. However we should be aware on that for instance. Also these people are usually what we call hackers. This is the greatest problem most sites are facing nowadays. Basically, most websites have filters that detects them these are one of the factors that protects the web from those spammers. Fortunately we thank this site for giving us instructions or somehow protects us or help us avoid those. Well,thank you so much for these wonderful post.

I think it still happens frequently. I get a couple of emails every week or so looking to do link exchanges.

It definitely still happens, we get numerous emails each week, and our clients get them and ask us if it will benefit. In a local marketing sense where you're simply cross promoting the small flower shop or photographer down the street it can work, if you're doing it as a link building, SEO tactic, it's has absolutely no value.

I don't think they're declining. If you go onto a forum like DigitalPoint or WarriorForum, the sites are flooded with link buying, link exchanges, people paying for email lists etc. Hopefully website owners become better educated and start looking for real fixes, and implement better, legitimate methods to receive search results. Like anything, it takes time for business owners to understand the ins and outs of the internet. Hopefully along the way, the honest marketers can reach and educate a larger proportion of the online business community. I know this is happening in our small community, so it's only a matter of time.

Reciprocal link exchanges aren't just bad SEO, they're also bad branding.

When people search throug your site via google, they'll come up with listings for viagra, adult toys and cheap cigarettes. Is that the kind of image you want for your family-oriented business?
