Is Your Ego Too Involved in Your Business?
Entrepreneurs often decide to start their own business to bolster their ego. The ego is part of self-esteem and protects you from getting hurt. But ego shouldn’t be the sole motivator to start your own business. You might think that running your own business gives you control of your destiny. But look closer- the desire to control your destiny might be your ego trying to protect you from rejection. After all, if you work for yourself, you can’t be rejected in job interviews, you can’t be ordered around by incompetent bosses and you can’t get fired. In short, you call the shots (or so you may think…).

Shashi, I don't agree with Steven Fisher's post when it comes to his usage of the word ego. My view is that your ego (the word I in Latin) should be involved in your business. Without your own engagement and creation of products and services, you will not be able to facilitate an exchange of values with your customers. It is important to start with the individual. In one way, you do business with individuals as traders, not with companies per se. I think that social media activities will emphasize this in the future.

Great link, Shashi. Thanks. Running your own business almost always can expose you to more rejection than you'll probably ever see at most jobs. After all, even if an employer complains about everything you do in the workplace, if at the end of the day you still have a job that's kind of an implicit approval. Also, rejection while job hunting ends once you're hired and there's no way of knowing after that how many other employers would have also approved have you if you had kept interviewing. But being in business for yourself can mean getting rejected for jobs a lot (every new client you approach is like another job interview) and being fired a lot (every time a customer drops you or doesn't come back for more service.)
