Like blog commenting, forum marketing can have SEO benefits. However, in order to do forum marketing well it’s important to realize that it’s about much more than promotion and getting links. The point of forum commenting is to build credibility and establish a good reputation within a niche community. Dropping links all over a forum might lead to some additional traffic at first, but will ultimately result in you just being viewed as a spammer within a community full of stakeholders.

I really like your thoughts on being circumspect about going for links on a forum - sage advice, indeed! Build up trust - that's worth a lot more in the long run.
