American English: Should Your UK Blog Use It?

There are subtle differences between American and British English. The differences can be so small that UK brands are sometimes letting their bloggers use US English on their sites. Yet research has shown that audiences don't like this. So should you be using US or UK English?

Yes, I think you should use American English! It is more colorful than British English! ;) Full disclosure: I am brought up with the Queen's English at home and from 3rd grade. British English is the second language in Sweden. My site on podcasting is written in American English due to the fact that I have studied and worked in the United States of America, and that many of my guests and listeners are from the Land of Opportunity...

Ah, but then you have met the recommend criteria of when you should use US English. Your audience is American and your native language is not English. There is no reason why you shouldn't use American English.

For many UK brands who don't want international clients, US English can confuse local audiences and this can damage their marketing effectiveness. Therefore, they should stick to UK English.
