Even earlier, in the dark ages, physical work was left to the farmers, cerfs, & oafs. It was considered beneath contempt for the clergy or nobility to toil. This is part of the mindset that lead to raids by groups like the Vikings. Further, a local lord could only gain mere sustenance by taxing his own people, so raiding the town over the next hill was commonplace. In raiding monasteries, the Vikings actually stimulated the European economy. Up to then when you died, your estate went to the church - all the money was tied up in the church. Also, since Christians were forbidden to trade w/non-Christians, the Vikings had little choice but to plunder (till they became "half-baptized" for business reasons). Times change!
