In business, being successful is not just about choosing when to seize upon an opportunity; it's not just about knowing how to incorporate the latest and greatest techniques; it's also about realizing when something you're doing isn't working and being able to just let go...

This post really resonated with me. Seeing when something just isn't working any more and simply letting it go. It's harder than it looks but it's something we need to do. I've recently let go of a part of my business that I was very attached to but I wasn't getting any tangible results.

Hi Adam,

I always think if you don't look realistically at your business results you will not progress. As I have made many over my career it does get easier with age to be more objective and know the warning signs so I can take action early.

Technology just scares the crap out of me. I've tried to learn to program the clock on a VCR, send a text-message and do a screen-shot. All to no avail. I failed miserably at them all. I'm too old to learn a whole new skill-set. I probably should have been born when horses and buggies and the Pony Express were in existence.

Adam,

Very nice post. The obstacle is definitely having to admit that you were wrong...a blow to anyone's self-confidence and ego. I have tried so many things that ended up being wrong; letting go was the hard part. My first three months of business were without a blog, my wife said "Start blogging!" I hesitated then had to admit I was wrong...a modern business does in fact need a blog. One of my big obstacles is not having a cellphone. People try and get hold of me...my response is just "leave a message, I'll get back to you either in ten minutes or tomorrow...or whenever." At some point I will have to admit defeat and get one. I am just petrified by tech though.

Yoni,

*Everyone* makes mistakes, but *not* everyone wants to admit it. But like Rivkah's quote (it's a very good one by the way), it's in those very mistakes that the biggest profits lie. If you never would have initially resisted maintaining a blog, for example, you would be less motivated and appreciative of it now.

And yeah, you're probably going to have to give in on the cellphone standoff... Why are you "petrified by technology"?

Adam
