I suppose we'd have to assume that they are refering to permission based email campaigns where the users have signed up to receive the emails. Newsletters and other opt-in email marketing are still very popular and very powerfull.

Nice post and great graphics. I'm surprised, though maybe I shouldn't be (I don't know that much about online comm.) that e-mail campaigns outpace blogs. E-mail campaigns are often not received that well (the SPAM issue).
