It's known as Software as a Service (SaaS), or the idea that you can get your software delivered conveniently, and at a low price, via the Web. Unlike buying software the old-fashioned way, by paying a big licensing fee up front, you pay for SaaS—also referred to as on-demand software—in pieces, spread out over time.
But as with most IT innovation, there's a lot of hype surrounding this technology—so much so that many of us don't know what to believe. Is this a viable thing? Should we be using this stuff? A little conflict maybe? Perhaps he wished he had a SaaS version of his software.
What the writer fails to either discuss or understand is that SaaS is only one thing: lower-risk. That means less money up front, less time to _Evaluate_ it, less time to learn it, and less [dedicated] equipment you had to buy to make it work.
If you can sign up for it, you already have enough equipment to run it....simple.
SaaS is like renting a car, its only easier, not cheaper.

The writer is just a writer for businessweek... What he's saying is that SaaS is much higher-risk that shrink-wrap software and it actually ends up requiring much more marketing leg work than the shrink-wrap model does.
