A couple of weeks back (30 November) the EU launched an investigation into whether Google was manipulating their search results and algorithm to favour their own products. The main reason this investigation was brought about was because Foundem.co.uk claimed Google was pushing up their own shopping comparison service above their competitors.

I don't know very much about the subject, but my analogy is that of a supermarket. The store places ads about sales all over the store, but since it is their store they have the right to place their own brands in the best, most visible locations. Ownership has its privileges.
