In most email readers, the images are disabled so showing the right text and using proper alt for images is critical. I liked all the points and would like to add one more. Having a link to a copy on a website in case the email does not open correctly.

I also agree about number 7 and although it depends on your market, newsletters allow you to be more conversational in tone which can help develop strong customer relationships.
