Seth Godin explains why word of mouth doesn't happen
"Kudos! This goes for more than just WOM. I think that before starting any company you should ask if it has some type of natural marketing advantage. That is, does it lend itself to word-of-mouth or easy publicity or even direct mail (i.e., an easy to identify and reach market is better than one that requires a wide market mailing list). If you don't have a natural advantage, expect to spend a lot on marketing. "Forget branding, invest in relations
"It's because branding is the identity of your firm. It's what people think of when they think of your company. It's not just your logo or your tagline. When you think if McDonald's (good or bad), you think of more than just Ronald McDonald. Therefore, if you invest in relations, and you become known as an honest or friendly person/company, you've just improved your brand. You can't "forget branding" without forgetting to build relations, too. This may seem like just semantics, but it makes a big difference. It's important to always keep in mind than anything you do either improves or takes away from your brand. "Subscribe
