I have had experience with large and small corporate intranets, and I still believe that engagement level is based on the person, and how social they wish to be. Platforms can facilitate this, and some are better than others, but it boils down to the discretion of the employee. I think, especially in large corporations, people are very conscious of how their comments can affect their jobs. But people who have the knack of social sharing without over-sharing or getting too personal can strike a good balance--they're visible on the intranet, so it looks good to the company, but their comments are "safe". No one wants to risk their jobs over posts on the company intranet. However intranets are good for feedback on how new implementations are working out.
