Marie Forleo not only talks the talk. She also walks the walk. In 2001, she quit her job in publishing and embarked on a small business adventure helping other entrepreneurs along the way.
“We deliver kick-ass small business and personal development training for women entrepreneurs,” says Forleo, explaining her business. “Our programs are easy to consume, outrageously fun, and get results. At the core of our brand is our Rich Happy & Hot philosophy. We define this as using your unique talents to change the world, while creating a lifestyle that you love.”
However, success in her own business, as for many women in her community, did not happen over night. Along the way, Marie has been a MTV hip-hop choreographer and producer, one of the world’s first Nike Elite Dance Athletes, a published author, and creator of a successful series of fitness DVDs.
Forleo has been interviewed by Tony Robbins, and worked with entrepreneur Richard Branson. Today, she estimates her multimillion dollar business includes training courses, live events and online business education and mentoring programs.
There are several things Forleo believes distinguish her brand.
“Our heart and genuine desire to serve,” she says. “We’re maniacal about customer service – whether you’re consuming our free content or investing in a paid training. Our market can feel how much we care about their success.”
Forleo says working with other top entrepreneurs also gives her business and brand the edge.
“Richard Branson is a mentor, and we work regularly with Virgin Unite to make business a force for good,” she says.
Russell Simmons, hip-hop mogul and philanthropist, also spoke at her Rich Happy & Hot LIVE event, held at Donna Karan’s Urban Zen center in New York City.
Forleo’s advice to the women entrepreneurs in her community is inspired by her own experience.
“Hustle, have patience and don’t quit! If you have to take on side gigs to fund your business – DO IT,” says Forleo. “Focus on long-term success, not a short-term ego trip. It’s often hardest to persevere in the beginning, so don’t compare yourself to others. Stay focused on creating outstanding products and services for your customers and, most importantly, commit to mastering the tools of modern entrepreneurship: online marketing, content marketing and word-of-mouth via social media.”
