Tech Definitions for Newbies

While recently reading an article online it occurred to me that many resources tend to make assumptions and alienate themselves from new entrepreneurs by being too advanced in their speech, writings, etc. One mistake that I see many guilty of is assuming that your readers are already “in the know.”

As hard as it may be for many of us to believe, there are still many “newbies” in the online entrepreneurial world. Thousands of new people are joining the ranks daily and those new to the world of the online entrepreneur do not know what terms like SEO stand for let alone what it means. And when speaking of the cloud, you may even catch them looking up to the sky in confusion. So for all you “newbies” out there, this one’s for you!

The next time you hear someone refer to the cloud, here’s a bit of insight for you:

The cloud. The cloud is just another term for the Internet. So cloud computing is simply online or Web-based software and services that are often cheaper and easier to use than purchasing licenses and maintaining software on your own machines. This can apply to everything from financial software to document and file storage.”

And here’s a bit of clarification on SEO for those of you who may not know:

SEO. Search engine optimization (SEO) is about driving traffic to your website. It consists of various practices meant to improve the chances that people coming from search engines like Google or Bing will find your business online. For example, if you sell home aquariums in Buffalo, you want to make sure your website appears high on the list next time someone does a search for “home aquarium, Buffalo.” Tactics include using strategic keywords across your website, tagging content and coding the site to make it SEO-friendly.”

Several other definitions for terms like “crowdsourcing,” “unified communications” and “virtualization” are provided in “Behind the Buzz: 5 Tech Trends, Defined.” I’d advise anyone whose just been enlightened by the two definitions above to go over and check it out. I’d also like to add one to the list – virtual freelancer. I’ve used that term many times in discussions and 9 times out of 10, I have to explain what it means. So for those of you unfamiliar with that term, a virtual freelancer is basically akin to an independent contractor. A virtual freelancer is someone who works independently, freelances, for one or more clients, virtually – i.e. online.

So there you have it – newbies have just been schooled.

I’d be interested to hear of any additional terms or phrases that you may find yourself having to explain to others. If you’d like to leave the term or phrase in the comments section along with a brief definition, we can continue to welcome and assist the many new faces appearing daily in the online world.
