Those qualities are indeed timeless Yoni. That said technology does help and each advancement may benefit us in small business. Just think of the development of platforms that we can use for websites or blogging that makes it easier to attract and connect with customers.

Technology is definitely a help for businesspeople. as much as I try to "bastardize" it I know deep in my heart that a little bit goes a long way. I am mostly in denial...and must admit that much of my lothing comes from FEAR!!!

Hi Adam!

Some things are better-made now than 40-50 years ago: cars then rarely if ever lasted over 100,000 miles (it was a miracle if they did), they got 4-6 miles/gallon, and were horrible death traps. Refrigerators were heavily built - all steel walls, but they were very inefficient, and the cork gaskets on the doors wore out quickly.

If we go back 100 years - before electric appliances, then workmanship was still excellent. In that era hand-made meant well-made, not slapped together in the 3rd world like it does now.

Of course it's built-in. Did you ever notice how the quality of things nowadays (think: appliances, cars, furniture, clothing) is junk compared to how they used to make them?

Thanks for your kind words and feedback. The built-in obsolescence is definitely a big Marketing weapon. Perhaps I will try it in my writing business. maybe a self-destruct button on resumes set for six-months!

The fifties is a real memory for me. I remember commercials like this and I remember when these advances seemed so giant. Now they seem ike silly steps that got us where we are. You are right that tomorrow todays big steps will seem silly in comparison. ~Devon

No end of ads on the radio at the moment to revolutionise my business by buying some accountancy package. This is way better advice. Revolutionise my business by doing something for my customers.

Thanks for your words and thoughts! Were I a techie, I probably wouldn't have written this article, perhaps my hatred of all things new was the catalyst.

It just seems there are so many, too many, old-fashioned ways of pleasing the client without having to indulge in the latest tech-trends.

I've lined up evey time a new iphone has gone on sale. I cherish it and carry it around in a protective case. I saved for it ever since I heard of it's debut. I'm still not sure what it can do and I use it basically like a regular cellphone. But as you said, they told me I must own one so I bought one.

I agree, Yoni!

It won't be long till everything that's hot now is as "5 minutes ago" as my old Atari 400 "super computer". It came w/16k, but I had it "bumped up" to an unbelievable 64k!!! Storage was on audio cassettes, and the modem needed a phone receiver. I think even the tube powered Univac kicked its ass.
