In 2010, data centers accounted for 2 percent of the total energy usage in the United States. This is a massive number, but much of it is of it is necessary to run the servers and other IT infrastructure that we rely on. That isn’t to say, however, that there are not improvements to be made. There are a number of inefficiencies that can be eliminated in order to make data centers greener.
