IBM and NASA Launch Open-Source AI Model on Hugging Face to Enhance Solar Weather Forecasting and Safeguard Technology

IBM and NASA have unveiled a revolutionary open-source AI model designed specifically for understanding high-resolution solar observation data. Named Surya, the model aims to predict how solar activity impacts both Earth and space-based technologies, providing a much-needed tool for preparing for solar-related disruptions that could affect modern life.

The sun, while sitting 93 million miles away, poses immediate risks to our technologies. Solar flares and coronal mass ejections have the potential to disrupt satellite operations, cause power outages, and even pose radiation hazards to astronauts. A recent study from Lloyd’s highlighted that global economic losses from severe solar weather could soar to as much as $2.4 trillion over a five-year period.

Researchers from IBM and NASA developed Surya to address these growing concerns. "Think of this as a weather forecast for space," stated Juan Bernabe-Moreno, Director of IBM Research Europe. "Surya gives us unprecedented capability to anticipate what’s coming and is not just a technological achievement, but a critical step toward protecting our technological civilization from the star that sustains us."

The release of Surya includes the largest known curated heliophysics dataset to facilitate advanced research into solar weather. Historically, solar weather prediction has been complicated due to the reliance on limited satellite views of the Sun’s surface. Surya mitigates these challenges by utilizing a comprehensive dataset that supports tasks such as solar flare prediction, solar wind speed assessment, and the identification of active regions on the Sun.

In its initial testing, Surya demonstrated a 16 percent improvement in solar flare classification accuracy, a significant advancement over traditional methods. For the first time, the model can visually illustrate where solar flares are likely to occur, with predictions extending up to two hours prior to an event.

The technical feats behind Surya were impressive. Researchers trained the model on nine years of high-resolution solar data from NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory. The data was larger than what conventional AI training models typically handle, necessitating a unique multi-architecture solution to ensure efficiency while processing the massive datasets. This innovative approach allows Surya to capture solar features at unprecedented scales.
