I don't think that people would have the self control to give these types of things up. Without the computer equipment they would be back in the 1990's. End of boycott!

Well done Yoni.

I hope the people who want to boycott read this. Boycotting a company is one thing but boycotting a country can't work. It's impossible and they would lose out on too much.

Nice post, Yoni.

The statement "let's boycott..." (fill in the blank) sounds big and important. But many times it's just talk; people are often quick to pick and choose what they are going to avoid.

BTW, You can add the USB flash drive to your list.

Yoni, for the first time during our recent state election I heard of someone who was up for election in our country wanting to boycott Israeli products in her council. She did not get elected and ultimately the council found to replace suppliers of all the products made in Israel would have costed the tax payer millions of dollars. It got defeated in the council.

People get very sensitive when discussing Israel. It is good to have some reasoned discussions that put things in perspective. I am sure it won't change anybody's mi if we can even just change the tone a little bit...

I would find it very challenging to live in Israel right now. In addition to all the local tensions, the whole Arab world is undergoing a period of intense turmoil, and nobody knows what that might lead to.that

A country with many troubles for sure (my office is our bomb shelter), but pretty good quality of life in other regards. Very few murders, not much crime and the kids stay out and play unsupervised until late. But as the boycott attests to, it is a constant PR battle.

I always believe that politics and business, and politics and blogging don't mix.

The point here was to dissect the machinations of a boycott and the "Boycott Israel" movement is in the news quite often.

I guess the point I was trying to make is that a successful boycott, like Cesar Chavez or many others is not an a-la-carte undertaking. It doesn't mean boycotting some things and not others because you can't give up certain things that you need in your day-to-day life.

I am also glad you made this non political.

As an Israeli Arab, I don't like the boycott because it hurts Arabs Jews and Christians. Also I don't necessarily like the policy of Israel in many situations but where is the boycott Syria movement and the boycott China and Iran and Darfur. All of these countries trample on human rights. Will Pakistan boycott America because they came to the territory to kill bin Laden? Why only Israel. This is a very good article which should make many people think.

Your feedback is much appreciated.

You are right that a boycott can hurt people that the boycotters don't intend on hurting. Israel is made up of many people: Muslims, Christians, Arabs, Jews, Beduin, Druse. A boycott doesn't make a distinction.

And why you ask is Syria not being boycotted for its crackdown? Sudan for its actions in Darfur? Turkey for its treatment of the Kurds? Iraq for ongoing massacres of Christians? Yemen for its bloody crackdown against its own citizens? Is Iraq boycotting American or Britain or Canada? I don't know but good questions.

Anyhow, as I mentioned, I'm just trying to look into the principle of a business boycott.
