One year ago I went the route of freelancer and started my own small business, but with no portfolio or testimonials, I was caught in the conundrum of "No Experience = No Job." I needed a great documented work history and a satisfied client-base fast. I came up with a plan. The results, which any beginner can use, have proven remarkable!

Thanks so much for your response! You are so right that it can apply to any field. I actually got a personal phone call from an attorney yesterday. He had become so frustrated at not being able to find his first job that he went into a lawyers office, told them he needed a desk to sit at because he was not leaving. He demanded a month-long free trial period at the end of which he would give the firm the following two choices: "If you like me and my work, hire me, if not, you will never see me again; just give me a chance to prove myself!" He is now in his eight year at the firm. The point of the article, at least in my mind is that the initial period of breaking in can be the toughest. It is the time when many are inclined to throw up their hands. In addition to the more traditional ways of making one's mark, there are the more unconventional options. Persistence is the key!

I think the same can apply to starting almost any kind of business. In the beginning lack of a track record is a really difficult thing to overcome. But overcome it you can in any variety of ways including showing clients what you are capable of first or finding that client who is looking for a fresh approach...and maybe a slightly lower rate than your more experienced competitors are charging.
