Another thing I like about the SWOT is that it is a great tool for structuring, evaluating, and summarizing information.

However, there seem to be some problems with the practical application. I have seen many people who have difficulties with the distinction between internal and external factors. They rather categorize identified factors into “good for us” and “bad for us”, followed by some more or less intuitive allocation to strength or opportunity (if “good for us”).

Lyceum, I made this experience with line managers. They had all the knowledge and were able to make sense of it. They just had problems to fit it into a framework they were unfamiliar with.

SWOT is a great analysis method for your internal strengths & weaknesses and your external opportunities & threats. The challenge is that these parameters over time, so you have to update your data bank of business intelligence om a regular basis.
