Freelance Rates: Asking For vs. Accepting a High Fee

If you are one of the dozens of people who read this blog, you know that I make a living as a professional blogger. And it’s not a bad living, either. I still struggle with asking for a high fee when setting freelance rates. I don’t mind accepting a high fee, but it’s hard to ask for one.

Fees, what I set, and what I ask for, are all connected to how I feel about myself, my worth, and my relationship with money. Accepting a high fee is easier - it means I don't have to negotiate. I just accept it. It's asking for one that can sometimes be a challenge.

Miranda: I am struggling with this topic too. I have sometimes paid in order to to present my stuff! ;) I have talked for free in order to start new potential business relationships. And I have been accepting a high fee for a speaking gig.

I will write a philosophical piece on the exchange of values and the trader principle. In the future, I will ask to get paid in silver (via my webshop) as one part of the terms of payment. I will call it an "advance of (real, objective) money". I have written a blog post in 2009 (Sponsor and Support EGO Blog) and quoted it in on my company site, WorkShop page:

"As a "trader in matter & spirit," I am open to discuss different terms of exchange of values, i.e., delivery of service and payment. As a supporter of objective money, i.e., precious metals, my standard price is 1 kg / ~35.27 oz of silver (Ag) according to the buy rates at GoldMoney for a 1/2 working day (circa 4 hours, effective time). (EGO, February 1, 2009.)"
