Success in a startup is not possible as a “one-man show.” An entrepreneur has to engage with team members, partners, investors, vendors, and customers. In my experience, the joy of positive engagement is sometimes the only pay you get in an early startup. Amazingly, many successful startups are built on this basis alone, with almost no money.

Martin,

Creating a motivational culture is no small trick. I think there are companies that don't even try to do this (the reason is a bit fuzzy) and there are other companies that believe they are creating an environment that motivates workers but are instead discouraging or overwhelming them. Both are, of course, bad ideas and will only hurt your company in the end, but finding things that will truly motivate your workforce takes some time, empathy, and planning.
