With avatars and favicons, your logo is being pushed into a square shape. Develop one version of your logo that is used whenever a square format is requested.

You bring up an interesting and often overlooked point about the new square shape many avatars and fav icons have accepted as standard practice. Great suggestion to consider "square" when developing your logo as well.
