Social communities, whether they're online or offline, have interesting dynamics. To make any kind of headway, you must understand and respect how each individual community functions before charging in and saying, "Hey, can I join the party, too?" Several factors can affect whether you're accepted into the community, or left on the outside looking in.

I think the idea of understanding social communities and their dynamics is amongst the most important ones in social marketing. The line between welcomed interaction and unwelcome marketing...and even spamming, is often more blurry than most marketers think. Respect is essential but more importantly the listening necessary to establish communication is critical.

I think we are finally getting some good business-focused articles to help businesses develop the right social media strategy for their business. Wish they had been around when I started :)
