I was recently asked to identify the #1 mistake businesses make with their social media marketing. I can think of dozens of mistakes. It all depends on the type of business and the structure of the company. However, there is one mistake I see time and time again – so often, that I am compelled to label it the #1 mistake!

Rachel: Will this mistake be fixed when leaders of organizations do understand the importance of new media activities and that it should be included in "communication policy"?

I think communication is a start - and a good one - but it will take more than that to generate results. The person who is tasked with social media management should have basic knowledge of social media and its constant changes, writing or copywriting skills, and be able to adapt to changes quickly. In some instances, I would also say it's helpful to have a passion for communicating with others' online. It's a different skill set than 'people skills.'
