Did you know you birthday year on Twittercan now show your birthday on your Twitter profile? You don’t have to include the birthday year on Twitter to all but you can add just the month and day to be shown. Why are some making a big deal over this while Facebook has been doing this for years with our profiles?

You hit the nail on the head. This is good marketing as far as it goes. And I'm sure that's the primary reason for the feature. What better way to gather as much information about your users as possible? After all, Twitter, like Facebook, is depending on advertising as its primary source of revenue. So even if they don't have a particular package designed for advertisers trying to target users by birthday yet, rest assured they will. Online small businesses, of course, should be working harder to collect useful information from their customers too. The big question, as you point out, involves the privacy issue. Nowadays online privacy is highly valued. So how much information can you collect about your customers before you no longer look curious and start to look creepy?

That's a good question but I've often got asked birthday from places I shop and they give you $10 to $20 off coupons. That's been going on for years now offline. Interesting...
